“Justice in the Shadow of Nature” Meeting on Green Social Work Book

The meeting titled “Justice in the Shadow of Nature: Introducing and Discussing the Book Green Social Work” was held on Tuesday, 12 May 2026 at the Women’s Institute, with the participation of a group of interested participants, researchers, and two of the book’s translators, Dr. Atefeh Farahani Safarabadi and Dr. Maryam Rahnama.

During the meeting, Lena Dominelli’s book Green Social Work was introduced, and the theoretical foundations of this approach were discussed. The speakers emphasized the importance of understanding the relationship between social justice, the environment, and sustainable development. Another main focus of the meeting was the connection between the concepts presented in the book and the Women’s Institute’s mission and activities in social and environmental fields.

By reviewing different chapters of the book, the speakers explained key concepts such as environmental justice, the impact of climate crises on vulnerable groups, the role of urban planning in reducing inequalities, social resilience, and the importance of citizen participation in responding to environmental crises. Within this framework, it was emphasized that environmental problems and social harms are inseparably connected, and that sustainable development cannot be achieved without simultaneous attention to social justice and environmental protection.

The final part of the meeting was dedicated to an open discussion among participants. Attendees shared their views and questions and exchanged ideas about the potential for developing this field in the country.

Among the most important outcomes of the meeting were the formation of specialized dialogue among social and environmental activists, the presentation of proposals for developing research and educational activities, the discussion of possibilities for translating and introducing successful local experiences at the international level, and the emphasis on continuing specialized meetings in this field.

This meeting was held in line with the Women’s Institute’s approach to expanding interdisciplinary dialogue and strengthening the connection between social justice, environmental responsibility, and sustainable development.
